Spotting Recycled Images – How To Tell If Atrocities Are Being Hyped or Hoaxed

These are screencaps from a facebook group which claims 50,000 Muslims have been killed in the last 10 days. Now, leaving aside the point that most modern military’s only wish they could be that effective, here’s some advice on spotting fakes.

Use google reverse image search and to look for recycled images whenever anyone starts drumming up noise about an atrocity. BBC recently got caught running a pic from Iraq in 2003 saying it was from a massacre in Syria. Even before that the BBC was caught cropping a photo to make a pro-Ahmadinejad rally look like a protest.

Russia Today also produces some hilarous content, like this documentary about the high quality of life in North Korea:

No, really, they’re serious. I’m sure the girl studying to become an IT engineer will be in high demand for North Korea’s intranet.
