Google Exec Chairman, Former CEO Schmidt: “People Aren’t Ready for the Technology Revolution”

Eric Schmidt spoke at the Techonomy conference in Lake Tahoe today and dropped some serious rhetorical bombs. “There was 5 exabytes of information created between the dawn of civilization through 2003,” Schmidt said, “but that much information is now created every 2 days, and the pace is increasing…People aren’t ready for the technology revolution that’s going to happen to them.”

“The only way to manage this is true transparency and no anonymity. In a world of asynchronous threats, it is too dangerous for there not to be some way to identify you. We need a [verified] name service for people. Governments will demand it.”

Do we really need it Eric or are you just saying that because “Governments will demand it”?

    Hi Eric,

These links you provide are often very interesting. However, the way that WordPress italicises block quotes is quite irritating. It’s uncomfortable to read.

On the toolbar when editing a post in the WordPress dashboard, there is a “kitchen sink” button; clicking this reveals a further drop-down toolbar, which includes an “indent” button. Might you consider using this to indent quoted passages, instead of the WordPress quote button?
