Anti Racist Mathematics, Feminist Criminology, White Privledge : The Story of Citation Needed

Wikipedia generally lets the Feminist/Anti-Racist crowd off pretty easy with their articles. After all, wikipedia is staffed heavily by men and they must do what they can to be good “allies” to the cause. However, when creating an encyclopedia entry you must maintain at least the appearance of scholarly rigor, otherwise you end up with The Story Of Citation Needed.

The issue of anti-racism in mathematics teaching has been the topic of some research works, who promote an anti-bias curriculum to counter a perceived bias in mathematical education.[citation needed]. These works claim that there is asociocultural context to mathematical education and suggest that the study of mathematics in Western societies has traditionally exhibited racial or cultural bias.[citation needed]

While ‘anti-racist mathematics’ and ‘ethnomathematics’ scholars share the assumption that any given mathematical understanding or practice is a product of a particular culture, the forms of their scholarship differ considerably, and they should not be confused with one another.[citation needed

Support of notion that mathematics is a subjective discipline (i.e., answers to mathematical problems are open to interpretation based on what ethnic branch of mathematics is used).[citation needed]


Criminology is the study of crime and criminal justice, and it covers a multitude of topics, but according to those of the feminist school of criminology the principal theories of criminality have been developed from male subjects, have been validated on male subjects, and focus on male victimization.[citation needed] While there may be nothing wrong with this, the theories have then been generalised to include all criminals, defendants and prisoners, i.e. the facts about crime tend to be based on the sex of the offender and not the crime itself.[citation needed] This ‘sexism’ in criminology also influences the sentencing, punishment, and imprisonment of women who are not expected to be criminals and, if they are, they may be described as ‘mad not bad’.[1][citation needed]

In criminology, just as in society, man was the centre of the universe and women were merely their complement.[citation needed]

Chivalry had only positive effects on women who were essentially more deceitful than men, and were the instigators rather than the perpetrators of crime.[clarification needed]

The study of patriarchy has also allowed feminists to uncover hidden forms of violence against women.[citation needed] For example, feminist critiques of pedagogy (how teachers teach) have become quite common, as education, particularly criminal justice education, becomes the domain for discovering examples of male-dominated thinking and examples of the marginalisation thesis (women being reminded that they are only women, or men being reminded that they are bad – simply because they are not women).[citation needed]


According to Roderick Harrison “wealth is a measure of cumulative advantage or disadvantage” and “the fact that black and Hispanic wealth is a fraction of white wealth also reflects a history of discrimination”.[26] Whites have historically had more opportunities to accumulate wealth.[citation needed] Some of the institutions of wealth creation amongst American citizens were open exclusively to whites[citation needed].

Over the past 40 years there has been less formal discrimination in America; the inequality in wealth between racial groups however, is still extant.[citation needed] Wealthy whites were able to pass along their wealth in the form of inheritances and transformative assets (inherited wealth which lifts a family beyond their own achievements) which continually give advantage to white[which?] Americans.[30]

Since houses in white neighborhoods appreciate faster, even African Americans who are able to overcome their “starting point” are unlikely to accumulate wealth as fast as whites. Shapiro asserts this is a continual cycle from which whites consistently benefit.[32] These benefits also have effects on schooling and other life opportunities.[citation needed]

Educational inequality is also a consequence of housing. Since most states determine school funding based on property taxes,[citation needed] schools in wealthier neighborhoods receive more funding per student.[citation needed]
